Origins and Lineage

Kriya Yoga was revived for the modern world by Mahavatar Babaji, a Himalayan master said to have preserved the ancient yogic teachings in their pure form. It was then passed down to Lahiri Mahasaya, who made it accessible to householders, and later to Sri Yukteswar and Paramahansa Yogananda, who introduced it to the West through the Autobiography of a Yogi.

These teachings trace their roots to the ancient Himalayan Rishis, who discovered that the body and breath are the bridge to mastering energy (prana) and consciousness.

The Science of Life Force (Prana)

At its core, Kriya Yoga is a pranic technology, a method of directing life-force energy through the central energy channel (sushumna nadi) along the spine.
By consciously controlling the breath, attention, and subtle energy, practitioners can:

  • Still the fluctuations of the mind,

  • Awaken dormant spiritual energy (Kundalini),

  • And accelerate the purification of karma (energetic impressions).

The breath becomes the tool to transmute life energy into spiritual awareness.

The Kriya Techniques

Breathwork or control: Directing energy up and down the spine in rhythmic cycles to magnetize and purify the subtle channels.
Meditation: Deep internal stillness where awareness rests in the divine self.
Mantra and Mudra: Sacred sound and gestures that refine vibrational frequency.
Self-inquiry and devotion (bhakti): Balancing inner discipline with surrender to the divine.

Each Kriya acts like a “spiritual accelerator,” compressing years of natural evolution into a shorter, more conscious process.

Purpose

Kriya Yoga is Self-realization—the direct experience of one’s unity with the Infinite. In essence, Kriya Yoga bridges science and spirituality, body and soul, matter and consciousness.

Himalayan Wisdom Tradition

The Himalayan yogis view the human being as a microcosm of the universe. Their teachings are highly systematic and experiential—each breath, sound, and movement is designed to align the practitioner with cosmic intelligence. Unlike modern “styles” of yoga focused on posture, this path is a technology of consciousness, hidden for centuries in the caves and monasteries of the Himalayas to protect its sanctity.
