Heal Your Inner Space
You can heal. At Inner Space, we believe in the power of nature to guide us back to our innate healing potential. One of the most straightforward ways to experience this connection is through essential oils—those fragrant, volatile compounds found in plant seeds, bark, roots, flowers, and other plant parts. If you’ve ever savored the aroma of a fresh rose, you’ve already encountered these potent plant essences. Beyond simply imparting delightful scents, essential oils help protect the plants themselves + have, for centuries, served humans as culinary aids, personal care ingredients, and tools for a wide range of wellness applications.

What are essential oils?
Essential oils are naturally occurring extracts that capture a plant’s most vital qualities. Different plant materials contain these oils in varying concentrations, which is why some species—like lavender or peppermint—are especially prized for their unique benefits + fragrances. In wellness routines, essential oils can be used as single extracts or blended to address specific emotional or physical needs. Whether you’re seeking calm, focus, or immune support, there’s likely an essential oil or combination of oils that can play a supportive role.
Why doterra + Why Essential Oils
-
What science & tradition say about essential oils as healing sources
Essential oils have been used in many traditional healing systems for millennia. In modern times there is growing research — much of it preliminary, but some stronger — pointing to various ways that essential oils can support mental, emotional, and physical health.
-
Olfactory & respiratory pathways
When you inhale essential oils, volatile compounds can interact with olfactory receptors. Signals from smell receptors go directly to brain centers (amygdala, hippocampus, olfactory cortex), which are deeply linked to emotion, memory, stress responses.
Some compounds are small enough to travel into the respiratory tract, cross the alveolar barrier, and reach bloodstream. From there they can have systemic effects.
Neurotransmitter modulation
Certain oils (e.g. lavender) have shown antidepressant or anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects via influencing levels of monoamines — serotonin, dopamine, etc.
Others may have sedative or calming effects via GABAergic or other inhibitory pathways.
Endocrine / hormonal effects
Essential oils may impact stress hormones (e.g. cortisol), which in turn affect many bodily systems (immune, metabolic, cardiovascular). Some inhalations have been shown to reduce cortisol. (PubMed)
Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial actions
Many EOs contain compounds with antioxidant activity, which can protect tissues from oxidative stress.
Some oils inhibit growth of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi) in laboratory settings.
Psychological / emotional modulation
Aromas can affect mood, reduce anxiety, improve sleep, reduce perceived stress. These effects may be partly due to conditioning (smell + memory), or to physiological calming via parasympathetic nervous system. (The School of Aromatic Studies)
Influence on other systems
Cardiovascular: effects on heart rate, blood pressure, heart rate variability. Oils like bergamot, lemon, lavender have been studied. (The School of Aromatic Studies)
Respiratory: some oils help soothe respiratory passages, reduce congestion (though caution is needed for allergies, asthma).
Immune: somewhat more speculative, but some oils show immune-modulation, partly via anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial effects.
-
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Mental health / mood disorders: Some studies show essential oils reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress. For example, lavender oil has been studied for anxiety, insomnia, etc.
Cognitive function / memory / alertness: Oils like rosemary or peppermint have been shown to increase alertness, improve memory or reaction speed in some small trials.
Sleep and relaxation: Lavender and other calming oils often show up in studies improving sleep quality or helping people relax.
Neuroprotective potential: Some preclinical and animal model studies suggest certain essential oils can help with oxidative stress in brain, potentially beneficial for neurodegenerative disorders.
-
Mental / Nervous System
Modulating neurotransmitters; reducing anxiety/stress; improving concentration and memory; influencing sleep cycles.
Emotional / Psychological
Smell links to emotion centers in brain; relief from stress or grief; odor-evoked memories; mood elevation; calming; self-soothing.
Immune System
Through indirect effects (stress reduction improves immune function), and direct antimicrobial/anti-inflammatory actions.
Respiratory System
Oils that are expectorant, anti-microbial; soothing of mucous membranes; supporting breathing (when used appropriately).
Cardiovascular System
Effects on heart rate, blood pressure, heart rate variability; calming of sympathetic overactivation.
Skin / Integumentary System
Topical applications (diluted) for wound healing, inflammation, antimicrobial protection, skin health.
Digestive, Endocrine, Musculoskeletal etc.
Some oils have warming, relaxing effects; can soothe digestive discomfort; influence hormonal balance; reduce muscle tension.
-
Variable strength / variability between batches: Even with high standards, plant chemistry changes with soil, season, harvest conditions. So potency and composition can vary. That’s true even for high-quality essential oils.
Safety concerns: Essential oils are potent. Undiluted use on skin can cause irritation or sensitization. Ingestion is controversial and potentially risky (only under expert guidance). Some oils are phototoxic. Not safe for all populations (children, pregnant women, certain medical conditions).
Scientific evidence is mixed: Many studies are small, animal studies, or have methodological limitations. Clinical trials are fewer, and often not large or rigorous enough to be conclusive. So essential oils often are adjuncts, not replacements for conventional therapies.
Regulatory / quality oversight: There’s no universal standard that all companies adhere to for essential oils; terms like “therapeutic-grade” are not universally defined or regulated. So consumer education is important. -
Intention & Ethical / Social Responsibility
From its founding, doTERRA has emphasized “doing good” along with “being good” — that is, pairing the wellness of end-users with social impact in sourcing communities.
The Healing Hands Foundation® is doTERRA’s philanthropic arm. It supports community development projects in sourcing areas: building schools, improving infrastructure, health clinics, clean water, etc.
Purity: “CPTG® – Certified Pure Tested Grade®”doTERRA uses a testing protocol they call CPTG (“Certified Pure Tested Grade”) for its essential oils. They say that every batch undergoes extensive physical, chemical, and stability testing to verify that the oils are free from synthetics, adulteration, or harmful contaminants.
Transparency: doTERRA provides GC/MS (Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry) test results for many of its single oils so customers can see the chemical profile.
Quality of sourcing: identifying not just plant species, but ideal soil, environment, part of plant, time of harvest, and method of distillation, all of which contribute to potency, consistency, and purity.
Co-Impact Sourcing®This is perhaps doTERRA’s signature sourcing model. Key elements include:
Sourcing from over 45 countries, many of which are developing/low-income.
Long-term partnerships with growers, harvesters, and distillers. Predictable contracts rather than ad hoc buying. This gives stability and allows local communities to plan ahead.
Fair, on-time payments and pricing that aims to be just in the local context.
Promoting cooperatives: encouraging small scale producers to form co-ops so they can share benefits such as better access to inputs, better bargaining, shared equipment.
Environmental stewardship: sustainable harvesting practices, minimizing negative environmental impacts, and promoting practices like regenerative agriculture. In some cases using what was previously wasted material (e.g. parts of plants that would not otherwise be used).Community development: profits or premiums (or Foundation funds) are used to support local social infrastructure (water, schools, clinics).
“Source to You”The idea is that doTERRA wants to track oils from the botanical source (farmer, distiller) all the way to the consumer. Transparency about origin, method, and stewardship.
They produce stories, brochures, “Behind the Bottle” materials to show not just the oil, but the people and places involved.
How doTERRA aligns with what people looking for high quality & ethical essential oils often wantPutting together what doTERRA says they do + what science suggests people want:
Purity + transparency → they provide testing and origin info.
Ethical sourcing + fair compensation → helps communities.
Functionality: they promote oils not just for scent but for wellness in multiple systems.
Intention: promoting not just product sales, but wellness, community development.
